Common wasp
Vespula vulgaris
Description
The common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) is a social insect (workers around 11–14 mm, queens up to around 20 mm) with the familiar yellow and black colouring. It builds papery nests in cavities, lofts, shutter boxes and underground, which can house very large numbers by late summer.
It is particularly attracted to sugary and protein-rich foods and becomes more aggressive near the nest and in late summer. Its sting is painful and can be dangerous for people with allergies.
