Fruit fly
Drosophila melanogaster
Description
The fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) is a tiny fly measuring 2–3 mm, yellowish-brown with red eyes. It develops on ripe or fermenting fruit, juices, organic waste and residues in drains.
It reproduces very quickly, and a small amount of fermenting material can produce large numbers. It is a common nuisance in kitchens, bars, restaurants and food shops.
