Description

The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is the most widespread cockroach in domestic and commercial environments. It measures 11–16 mm and is light brown with two parallel dark stripes on the pronotum. It is an excellent climber and moves very quickly.

It prefers warm, humid areas close to food — kitchens, back kitchens and utility rooms — hiding in cracks and crevices by day and emerging at night. The female carries an egg case containing dozens of eggs until they hatch, encouraging very rapid proliferation.

Risks and spread

The German cockroach is a pest of major hygiene concern, capable of contaminating food and premises and multiplying rapidly.

  • Hygiene and health — It mechanically carries bacteria (such as salmonella and E. coli) onto food and surfaces.
  • Allergies — Droppings and body fragments are allergens that can worsen asthma and allergic reactions.
  • Contamination — It soils food supplies and dishes with droppings and foul odour.
  • Proliferation — Without intervention, the infestation grows exponentially.

Prevention

  1. 1

Keep kitchens and food preparation areas thoroughly clean

  2. 2

Store food in closed containers and manage waste properly

  3. 3

Eliminate standing water and reduce humidity

  4. 4

Seal cracks, skirting boards and utility penetrations

  5. 5

    Inspect incoming goods and packaging
