Tapinoma magnum
Tapinoma magnum
Description
Tapinoma magnum is an invasive ant native to the Mediterranean region, reported in the Canton of Ticino since 2023 (present north of the Alps since 2012). It forms supercolonies of millions of individuals that can extend over hundreds of metres, causing significant damage to buildings, electrical infrastructure and gardens. Unlike native ants, this species does not display territorial behaviour between colonies of the same population, allowing it to expand without natural boundaries.
Key characteristics
2–4 mm (workers), up to 6 mm (queen)
Dark brown, almost black
Near the surface, under stones, paving and pots, in cracks in walls and foundations
Supercolonies with millions of individuals and hundreds of queens
Aphid honeydew, sugary substances, small insects, organic remains
By budding: new colonies split from the parent colony without a mating flight
Mainly from March to November, also in winter in heated spaces
Risks and spread
- Structural damage — They nest in foundations, beneath paving and inside walls, causing subsidence and water ingress.
- Electrical systems — They enter electrical panels, sockets and switches, causing short circuits and malfunctions.
- Gardens and vegetable plots — They protect aphids for their honeydew, encouraging aphid infestations on plants.
- Food hygiene — They contaminate food and preparation surfaces, posing a risk to catering businesses.
- Biodiversity — They compete with native ants, disrupting the local ecosystem.
Prevention
-
1
Seal gaps and cracks in foundations and external walls
-
2
Keep vegetation away from the building’s walls (at least 30 cm)
-
3
Remove materials piled near foundations (wood, stones, pots)
-
4
Regularly inspect electrical panels and cable ducts
-
5
Avoid leaving food uncovered or crumbs in the kitchen
-
6
Repair leaking pipes (ants seek water)
-
7
If you see large ant trails, contact a professional immediately
Our intervention
-
Accurate species identification and colony mapping
-
Treatment with targeted slow-acting baits (to reach the queens)
-
Post-treatment monitoring to verify effectiveness
-
Preventive advice to reduce the risk of reinfestation
