Description

Spiders are very common predatory arachnids, with many species living in and around buildings. They can be recognised by their eight legs and the webs they weave in corners, on ceilings, in cellars and in undisturbed spaces.

In our region, domestic species are largely harmless and even beneficial, as they feed on other insects. Widespread webs are mainly an aesthetic issue and indicate available prey.

Key characteristics

Appearance

Arachnid with eight legs

Habitat

Corners, ceilings, cellars, sheltered outdoor areas

Behaviour

Predator, weaves webs

Danger level

Domestic species mostly harmless

Benefits

Feeds on other insects

Risks and spread

House spiders are generally harmless; the main nuisance is aesthetic (webs) and linked to the presence of insect prey.

  • Appearance — Webs and cocoons are unsightly in homes and businesses.
  • Prey indicator — Large numbers indicate abundant insects on which they feed.
  • Rare bites — Only a few species may bite if handled, generally with mild effects.

Prevention

  1. 1

Regularly remove webs from corners and ceilings

  2. 2

Reduce insect prey (lighting, hygiene, insect screens)

  3. 3

Seal cracks and passages leading indoors

  4. 4

Keep cellars, garages and storage rooms tidy
